His anointing will smear onto you -- to enwrap and preserve you fresh -- when you reach out and touch Him. }}} Chapter 1 -- Announcing the Light of God {{{ ~ *Announcing the Enduring Putting On of Christ to Enwrap and Preserve In His Shared Cheer (Χαρα) {{{ ~ 1 What was from determination that it be so (απ αρχης, not απο της αρχης) -- what we have heard (perf.), what we have seen (εωρακαμεν, perf.) by our eyes, what we observed closely and intently (εθεασαμεθα, aor.) and our hands twitched touching fingers to feel (εψηλαφησαν, aor.) * (cf. δια [etsba] hebrew ) -- concerning the message (not an announcement, αγγελια, but the actual subject matter, περι του λογου) of living yoked with God by putting on Christ (through Jesus) * the putting on of Christ (της ζωης) * of the living of (i.e. being yoked with) God by putting on Christ (της ζωης) 2 -- and the putting on of Christ was manifiested and we have seen (perf.) and are testifying to and announcing off (απαγελλομεν) to y'all the enduring putting on of Christ (την ζωην αιωνιον) which One was where the Father was (προς τον πατερα) and manifested to us; 3 what we have seen (perf.) and have heard (perf.), we are announcing off also to y'all -- so that y'all too may be having mutual sharing (κοινωνιαν) with us; and indeed our mutual sharing (is) with what is of (μετα, not συν) the Father and with what is of His mature son (του υιου αυτου) Jesus Christ (Yahweh saves anointed = "I'm enwrapping and preserving anointed") -- 4 and we are writing these things so that our cheer may be made replete (perf. pass., having been filled). comments (v1-4) {{{ ~ 1 Tim 3:16 And undisputably, great is the mystery of goodly reverence (of God): Who was manifested in flesh, proven righteous in spirit, seen by messengers, heralded in nations, fed upon in arraying fashion (επιστευθη εν κοσμω), taken up in expression (ανελημφθη εν δοξη). }}} }}} God is Light {{{ ~ 5 This is the announcement (αγγελια) which we have heard (perf.) from Him and are re-announcing (αναγγελλομεν) to y'all: > "God is light and in Him is no shadiness at all!" }}} *Be Walking in the Light, the Life of His Son {{{ ~ 6 When we're walking around in the shadiness and say we're having mutual sharing with what is of Him, * we're deceiving ourselves (ψευδομεθα, mid.) and not doing The Truth (i.e. walking in reality, walking in the light); 7 but when we're walking around in the light -- just as He, Himself, is in the light -- we're having mutual sharing with what is of others of the same sort (αλληλων) and the blood (spiritual life incarnate) of His mature son (του υιου αυτου) Jesus ("I'm enwrapping and preserving"), totally cleanses us from all inabilities to do as He would (αμαρτιας); 8 when we say we aren't having inability to do as He would, we're deceiving ourselves and The Truth isn't in us (no reality, no light); 9 when we're speaking in accordance to (i.e. acknowledging, ομολογωμεν) our inabilities to do as He would, He is faithful and just to send off (αφιημι) these inabilities and clear us utterly from all wrong; 10 when we say we've always done as He would (ουχ ημαρτηκαμεν, perf., aka. haven't ever sinned), we make Him (out as) a liar and His message isn't in us. }}} }}} Chapter 2 -- Walk in the Light {{{ ~ *Jesus Christ, Our Advocate to Restore Good Humor When We Fail to Do as He Would {{{ ~ 1 My dear pupils (τεκνια μου), I'm writing y'all these things so y'all might do as He would. (ινα μη αμαρτητε, so y'all might not not do as He would). * (ινα συνεσις καλη, i.e. Ιωαννης ευθειας ποιει τας τριβους κυριου, cf. Mk. 1:3, Mk. 1:1-4) But when anyone doesn't do as He would, we always have (εχομεν, pres.) an advocate called to side you (παρακλητον) towards the Father -- equitably just (δικαιος) Jesus Christ ("I'm enwrapping and preserving anointed"); *2 and He, himself, is an expiating propitiation (ιλασμος, an appeasement to restore good humor, cf. hilarity) concerning our inabilities to do as He would -- not just ours but also the entire world system's. (This covers all humanity in two groups: we who have been called out of the world system and those still in it.) }}} *Be Keeping Watch Upon His Instructions and Message to Walk About as He Did {{{ ~ 3 And this is how we know (pres.) that we have come to know (perf.) Him -- if ever we might be keeping watch upon (τηρωμεν) His instructions; 4 anyone not keeping watch upon (μη τηρων) His instructions saying (λεγων) "I have come to know (perf.) Him" is a liar covering up the real situation and the truth isn't in him; 5 but God's fatherly disciplining (αγαπη) has been completed certainly in whoever may be keeping watch upon His message -- this is how we know we're in Him; 6 anyone claiming (λεγων) to be abiding in Him should be walking about just as He did. note: logos in us to express logia of God, CPU instructions energeia the message in us to express the reasonings of God }}} **What is True in Him is True in Us {{{ ~ 7 Y'all under fatherly disciplining, Αγαπητοι, I'm not writing a new instruction to y'all but (αλλα) an old one which we used to have (impf.) from determination that it be so -- the old instruction is the message which y'all heard (i.e. heeded to do as told, OT, aka. law); 8 I'm re-writing (παλιν γραφω) a new instruction to y'all because the shadiness is being slipped aside (παραγεται, pres. pass.) and the true light is already shining (i.e growth into Christ, Christ in us, divine influence on the heart, NT, aka. grace) * (e.g. Jacob, a crimsom worm swelling up from the inside to become Israel, a mature son of God who is as God is) > -- "what is true in Him is true in y'all"; 11 indeed, anyone hating his brother is in shadiness, walks about in shadiness, and hasn't ever recognized (οιδεν, perf. from obsolete ειδω, cf. עדי) where he's undertowing to (υπαγει), because the shadiness blinded (opaqued as if smoky) his eyes. }}} *Brotherly Distinction Between Τεκνια (most) and Παιδια (fewer) {{{ ~ 12 I'm writing (pres.) y'all (programming you) that`(οτι) (present tense, being done over and over again): rank novices (τεκνια, infantile produced ones; here in contrast to παιδια, below), your inabilities to do as He would have been sent off permanently (αφεωνται, perf. pass., now and forever) because of His (ο υιος του ανθροπου) Name (ονομα, symbolic representation to agitate or drive as by wind to be like); 13 fathers (πατερες, ones holding the path to development of family, cf. בא), you've come to know (εγνωκατε, perf.) self-disciplined control (τον απ αρχης, the from determination that it be so); young men (νεανισκοι), you've overcome (νενικηκατε, perf.) the one promoting toil (τον πονηρον) (or toilsome works); 14 I wrote (aor.) y'all that (aorist tense, not being done over and over again because you got the message): children under discipline (παιδια), you've come to know the father; fathers, you've come to know self-disciplined control; young men, you've overcome (perf.) the one promoting toil and the message of God resides (pres.) in you and you're (pres.) strong; *comments (v 12-14) . {{{ ~ Heb 7:14 For it's evident that our Lord sprang up out of praise and mimicry (Ιουδα, Judah) into which generated growth (φυλην, aka. tribe) Moses (drawing out of the water of lusts and desires) said nothing concerning priests; Heb 7:15 and it's still more abundantly evident since a priest of a different sort (ετερος) is arising (ανισταται, pres. mid.) according to the likeness (ομοιοτητα) of Melxisedek (King of Righteousness) * (cf. the Man Child (παις), ala, Witness Lee); Heb 7:16 who hasn't come about (γεγονεν, perf.) according to a (body of) law (νομον) of fleshly instruction (εντολης) * but (αλλα, more keenly of the same sort) * according to δυναμιν of indissoluble (ακαταλυτου) putting on of Christ (ζωης) * Heb 7:17 For it's being testified to (μαρτυρειται, pres. pass., being obtained and told from what was observed) that * "You (are) a priest according to the order of Malkisedek εις τον αιωνα (enduringly?)." }}} }}} *Don't Αγαπατε the World System, Do God's Will {{{ ~ 15 Μη αγαπατε the world system nor the things in it (i.e. don't put up with it); if anyone αγαπα the world system, the Father's αγαπη isn't in him (so honor the Father, τιμα τον πατερα): 16 because everything that is in the world system -- the lust (επιθυμια, emoting upon, lusting after) of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the belting on of another mind (η αλαζονεια, cf. pretension, vain expression) of biological things (του βιου) -- isn't out of the Father * but (αλλα, more keenly of the same sort) is out of the world system; 17 and the world system is being led aside (παραγεται, pres. pass.) along with (και) it's lust, * but he who does (ο ποιων) God's will abides εις τον αιωνα. }}} *Distinction Between Παιδια and Αντιχριστοι Posing as Spiritual Leaders {{{ ~ 18 Children under discipline (παιδια), * it's a culminating (εσχατη, pour out fully to a mark inside, aka. last) time (ωρα, a portioning of time, aka. hour), parenthetical section (apodosis?) {{{ ~ * we know it's a culminating time because (οθεν) right now (και νυν) many espousing anything else but providing what is needed (αντιχριστοι) have come about (γεγονασιν, perf.) -- just as you heard he (αντιχριστος) is proceeding (ερχεται, pres., is coming, proceeding, being carried along); 19 they proceeded out (εξηλθαν, aor. of εξερχονται) of us (i.e. by the apostles' activity motivating them) but (αλλ᾽) they were never (ουκ ησαν, impf.) of us (i.e. they never bore the apostles' message): for if they were (impf.) of us (i.e. bearing the message), they would have continued (μεμενηκεισαν αν, pluperf.) with what is of us (i.e. the message, not outward activity); the reason why (they proceeded out) was so (αλλ᾽ ινα) it might be rendered apparent (φανερωθωσιν, aor. subj. pass.) that all aren't of us (i.e. bearing the message); }}} 20 but (και) y'all (children under discipline) continue having (εχετε, pres.) a fortifying divine influence anointed (χρισμα) (i.e. the Holy Spirit, who is what is needed) from the distincly separate (unique) one (απο του αγιου, i.e. from Jesus Christ) and continue knowing (οιδατε, pres, knowing by having seen, as in עדי) all things (i.e. continue learning, children); 21 I didn't write (aor.) y'all (children under discipline) because (οτι) y'all aren't learning (pres.) the truth but more distinctly because (αλλ οτι) y'all are learning it and because (και οτι) all falsehood (ψευδος, reality sullied and altered by the touch of man) isn't of the Truth. comments (v21) {{{ ~ This is a caution to be continuously turning to the unadulterated message ourselves to be refreshing and cleaning our personal understandings of Christ. (cf. Jude 23 comments.) }}} }}} *Be Putting on Christ, Don't Adulterate the Way {{{ ~ 22 Who is the one adulterating the directly simple and smooth way (Τις εστιν ο ψευστης) if not (ει μη) he who is steadfastly unaccepting (ο αρνουμενος) -- namely that (οτι) Jesus ("I'm enwrapping and preserving") isn't the one providing what is needed (ο Χριστος)? this is he who is espousing anything else but providing what is needed (ο αντιχριστος), he who is steadfastly unaccepting (ο αρνουμενος) the Father and the Son; 23 everyone steadfastly unaccepting the Son neither has the Father, he who is speaking in accordance to the Son has the Father too; *24 what y'all heard (aor.) yourselves from determination that it be so (i.e, the Father's determination for us to hear), it shall be continuing on (μενετω, pres. imp.) in y'all (i.e. because it's His determination); and y'all will continue on (μενειτε, fut.) yourselves in the Son AND (consequently) in the Father, if (εαν) what y'all heard from determination that it be so (απ αρχης) continues on (μεινη, aor. subj.) in y'all; * comments (v24) {{{ ~ What the Father determined y'all to hear shall be continuing on (pres. imp.) in y'all; and y'all will continue on yourselves (fut.) in the Son AND (consequently) in the Father, since what the Father determined y'all to hear is continuing on in y'all * (i.e. since it does, as flatly stated at the beginning of this verse); it shall be continuing on (μενετω, pres. imp.) in y'all -- what y'all heard (aor.) yourselves from determination that it be so (απ αρχης); and y'all will continue on (μενειτε, fut.) yourselves in the Son and in the Father, if (εαν) what y'all heard from determination (απ αρχης) continues on (μεινη, aor. subj.) in y'all }}} 25 this also is the specific announcement (η επαγγελια) which he, himself, announced specifically for himself (ην αυτος επηγγειλατο, aor. mid.) to us: > the enduring putting on of Christ (την ζωην την αιωνιον). }}} Παιδια are Discipled by His Influence, They Need No Other Discipling (Unlike Τεκνια) {{{ ~ 26 I wrote y'all these things about those leading y'all erratically astray (περι των πλανωντων); 27 as for y'all (και υμεις), the anointed fortifying divine influence (το χρισμα) which y'all received (ελαβετε, aor.) from Him, it's continuing on (μενει, pres.) in y'all and y'all don't need (ου χρειαν εχετε, pres.) someone discipling y'all (ινα τις διδασκη υμας, pres. subj.); more keenly (αλλ), just as (ως) His anointed fortifying divine influence (το χρισμα αυτου) is discipling (διδασκει, pres.) y'all about all things and is a reality (αληθες) and not a falsehood (ψευδος), y'all also are continuing on (μενετε) in it just as it discipled you (καθως εδιδαξεν υμας) }}} *Be Continuing On In Him, Everyone Doing Righteousness is Consolidated Out of Him {{{ ~ 28 Now, dear learners, Και νυν, τεκνια, (immature descendants) be continuing on in Him, μενετε εν αυτω, (pres. imp.) so that when He appears ινα εαν φανερωθη (aor. subj. pass.) we have sharply acquainted speech σχωμεν παρρησιαν (aor. subj.) and aren't unbenefited from Him και μη αισχυνθωμεν απ αυτου (aor. subj. pass.) when He's alongside; εν τη παρουσια αυτου. comments (v28) {{{ ~ απ αυτου -- off from Him (i.e. not having close association and familiarity) }}} 29 if y'all know (by having seen indelibly) εαν ειδητε (οιδα, subj.) that He is righteous (equitably just), οτι δικαιος εστιν, y'all are recognizing also that γινωσκετε οτι και everyone doing righteousness πας ποιων την δικαιοσυνην has been consolidated out of Him; εξ αυτου γεγεννηται. (perf. pass. sing.) }}} }}} 3:1 y'all note ιδετε, οραω aor. imp. what kind of fatherly disciplining the Father has given us, ποταπην αγαπην δεδωκεν perf. that we should be called descendant products of God -- and we are! κληθωμεν τεκνα θεου aor. subj. pass. the world system isn't recognizing us ου γινωσκει because it didn't even recognize Him. ουκ εγνω aor. comments (v3:1) {{{ ~ this is why (δια τουτο) the world system isn't recognizing us, explicity that (οτι) it didn't recognize Him. }}} Chapter 3 -- Share the Light {{{ ~ *Separating and Purifying Ourselves from the World System {{{ ~ 3:2 Y'all under fatherly disciplining, Αγαπητοι, now we are descendant products of God, τεκνα θεου what we'll be isn't yet raised shining. (ουπω εφανερωθη, aor. pass., derivatively: rendered apparent, manifest) we know indelibly that οιδαμεν οτι when He's raised shining we'll be like Him εαν φανερωθη ομοιοι aor. sub. pass. because we'll see Him for ourselves just as He is, οψομεθα, οπτομαι, οραω fut. mid. 3:3 and everyone having this expectation focused on Him ελπιδα ταυτην επ αυτω is separating and purifying himself from the world system αγνιζει εαυτον -- just as He is separate and pure from the whole world system. αγνος }}} *Studying Him as The Shining Example for Direction {{{~ 3:4 Everyone failing to comply as expected Πας ο ποιων την αμαρτιαν also isn't compellingly directed και την ανομιαν ποιει, -- and this failure is the lack of compelling direction -- και η αμαρτια εστιν η ανομια, comments (v 3:4) {{{ ~ Everyone rendering the failure to comply as expected is also rendering the lack of law (compelling direction, directives to comply with)) -- and the failure to comply as expected is the lack of law -- }}} 3:5 and y'all know indelibly that He is raised shining οιδατε οτι εκεινος εφανερωθη aor. pass. so that He may take away these failures ινα αρη τας αμαρτιας aor. subj. -- and failure to comply as expected isn't in Him; 3:6 everyone continuing on in Him isn't failing to comply as expected from above, ουχ αμαρτανει everyone so failing has come neither to study Him ουχ εωρακεν (perf.) (i.e. as τεκνια do) }}} He was Raised Shining to Loosen the Workings of the Self-Asserter (Ο Διαβολος) {{{ ~ 3:7 Dear recognizing learners, Τεκνια, let no one be leading y'all erratically astray: πλανατω pres. imp. anyone being fair and equitable ο ποιων την δικαιοσυνην is fair and equitable -- just as He is; δικαιος 3:8 anyone failing to comply as expected ο ποιων την αμαρτιαν is out of the self-asserter (i.e the devil) εκ του διαβολου -- because the self-asserter is determined to be οτι απ αρχης failing to comply as expected from above. αμαρτανει The Mature Son of The God was raised shining (i.e. for all to see) εις τουτο εφανερωθη ο υιος του θεου so He could loosen the workings of the self-asserter. ινα λυση τα εργα }}} Spirits of the Born Again are Perfected {{{ ~ 3:9 Everyone who's been generated and consolidated out of The God γεγεννημενος perf. pass. ptc. isn't failing to comply as expected αμαρτιαν ου ποιει -- because His seed is continuing on in him; οτι σπερμα μενει, pres. and he's not able to be failing to comply as expected from above και ου δυναται αμαρτανειν, -- because he's been generated and consolidated out of The God; οτι εκ του θεου γεγεννηται. perf. pass. }}} *Souls of All People Lack Development: Become Fair, Equitable, and Mentoring of The Brothers {{{ ~ 10 the descendant products of The God and those of the self-asserter τα τεκνα του θεου και τα τεκνα του διαβολου are glaringly obvious in this: εν τουτω φανερα * everyone who mightn't be fair and equitable isn't out of The God πας ο μη ποιων δικαιοσυνην, * -- the same is true of everyone who mightn't be και ο μη αγαπων τον αδελφον αυτου. mentoring to develop his brother. (i.e. letting God shine through in contrast to being self-asserting) }}} *Be Mentoring to Develop One Another, Not Causing Enslaving Toil and Misery {{{ ~ 11 For this is the announcement y'all heard from determination that it be so: Οτι αυτη η αγγελια ην ηκουσατε απ αρχης, aor. * that we be mentoring to develop one another; ινα αγαπωμεν αλληλους, pres. subj. 12 not how Cain (a works-centered builder of things) ου καθως Καιν out of causing enslaving toil and misery was εκ του πονηρου ην impf. and slaughtered his brother και εσφαξεν τον αδελφον αυτου: aor. -- why did he slaughter him? και χαριν τινος εσφαξεν αυτον? aor. because the things he did were causing enslaving toil and misery, οτι τα εργα ουτου πονηρα ην impf. while those of his brother were fair and equitable; τα δε του αδελφου αυτου δικαια. impf. 13 don't be amazed, brothers, [και] μη θαυμαζετε, αδελφοι, if the world system hates you; ει μισει υμας ο κοσμος. 14 we know indeed that we have walked over to be following after (Jesus) ημεις οιδαμεν οτι μεταβεβηκαμεν perf. into living of (i.e. being yoked with) God by putting on Christ εις την ζωην (spiritual life) out of absolutely continuing to put down (i.e. rejecting Christ), εκ του θανατου, (spiritual death) * because we are mentoring to develop the brothers οτι αγαπωμεν τους αδελφους: -- anyone not mentoring to develop continues on ο μη αγαπων μενει totally rejecting Christ and spiritual life; εν τω θανατω. 15 everyone hating his brother πας ο μισων τον αδελφον αυτου is laying low a man (e.g. invalidating, murdering) ανθρωποκτονος εστιν and we know indeed that everyone doing this και οιδατε οτι πας ανθρωποκτονος doesn't have enduring living of God ουκ εχει ζωην αιωνιον going on in him; εν αυτω μενουσαν. *16 in this we have recognized the mentoring to develop, εν τουτω εγνωκαμεν την αγαπην, that He set in place His soul for us οτι εκεινος υπερ ημων την ψυχην αυτου εθηκεν: aor. -- and we ought to set in place souls for the brothers και ημεις οφειλομεν υπερ των αδελφων τας ψυχας θειναι. aor. inf. Jesus being God's mature son οτι Ιησους εστιν ο υιος του θεου, has God abiding in him -- and he in God; ο θεος εν αυτω μενει και αυτος εν τω θεω. 16 we've recognized and come to trust and rely on και ημεις εγνωκαμεν και πεπιστευκαμεν perf. the conduction of fatherly discipline and self-restraint to develop family την αγαπην that God has in us (i.e. working actively within us, ενεργων). ην εχει ο θεος εν ημιν. }}} *God Develops a Self-Restrained Family, Don't be Incited to Blather, Show Self-Restraint to Him and the Brethren {{{ ~ *God is Conducting Fatherly Discipline and Self-Restraint to Develop Family: Don't be Incited to Blubber God is conducting fatherly discipline and self-restraint to develop family; Ο θεος αγαπη εστιν, one continuing on in it is continuing on in Him, και ο μενων εν τη αγαπη εν τω θεω μενει and He is continuing on in him; και ο θεος εν αυτω μενει. *17 by this (i.e. our continuing on in it and not checking God, cf. v12) εν τουτω it's gushed up fully among us, τετελειωται η αγαπη μεθ ημων, perf. pass. so that we may have familiarity and ease of speech (e.g. boldness) ινα παρρησιαν εχωμεν * when the decision is made (i.e. judgment day), εν τη ημερα της κρισεως, because just as Jesus (the mature son) is, οτι καθως εκεινος εστιν * we also are in this world system (e.g. ignored and kept at a distance ???). και ημεις εσμεν εν τω κοσμω τουτω. 18 incitement of blubbering isn't in it φοβος ουκ εστιν εν τη αγαπη * (i.e. in the conduction of fatherly discipline and self-restraint to develop family) * -- more keenly, when it's able to gush up fully αλλ η τελεια αγαπη it throws out incitement of blubbering, εξω βαλλει τον φοβον, * because incitement of blubbering can be curtailed (curtails?) -- οτι ο φοβος κολασιν εχει, indeed, one inciting himself to blubbering ο δε φοβουμενος pres. ptc. mid. hasn't been perfected in it. ου τετελειωται εν τη αγαπη. perf. pass. 19 the only way we can be conducive with it at all is because He conducted it to us first. if we may hate a brother we're not being conducive with it, so no way can we say that we're conducive of it towards God, after all, we're familiar with a brother, but we've never even seen God. if someone may say they're conducive with it towards God, yet is hating his brother, he's a liar! making it impossible to be conducive with it towards God. if we hate our brother, whom we're familiar with, we're unable to be conducive with it towards God, whom we've never even seen. 19 we're conducive with it, ημεις αγαπωμεν, because He conducted it to us first. οτι αυτος πρωτος ηγαπησεν ημας. 20 if someone says they're conducive with it towards God, yet is hating his brother, he's a liar! for he can't be so with God, whom he's never seen, if he mayn't be so with his brother, whom he's familar with; for if he isn't conducive with it towards his brother, whom he's familiar with, he can't be so towards God, whom he's never even seen; --HERE *20 if someone says "I'm conducting myself as Father teaches towards God", εαν τις ειπη οτι "Αγαπω τον θεον" pres. subj. yet is hating his brother, και τον αδελφον αυτου μιση, pres. subj. he's a liar! ψευστης εστιν for if he isn't conducting himself with fatherly discipline (mayn't be) -- ο γαρ μη αγαπων and self-restraint to develop family towards his brother, τον αδελφον αυτου whom he's familiar with, ον εωρακεν, perf. he isn't able to conduct it towards God, τον θεον ον ουχ εωρακεν perf. whom he's never seen; ου δυναται αγαπαν. God, whom he's never even seen, τον θεον ον ουχ εωρακεν perf. he isn't able to conduct it towards; ου δυναται αγαπαν.
