Accepted Verse Abbreviations

So what can you type in the Bible Browser's verse selection box? Well, pretty much anything of the following formats:

  • Matthew 1:1
  • Matthew 1.1
  • Philemon 3
  • 1 Peter 1:1
  • 1 Peter 1:1-3
  • 1 tim 3.1
  • Phil. 2:1-11
  • Mark 16 - returns the whole chapter
  • 1 Tim 2:5-3:1 - returns everything in between
  • and the list goes on...

Unfortunately we do not currently support

  • Mark 16:1-Luke 1:2
  • 1 Corinthians 1:1 - 2:1 (we don't like spaces around the hyphen)

The types of abbreviations for booknames are too varied too list here. I tried to accomodate all variations I could think of, but if one is missing just let me know.

Regarding the Names of Books

The majority of the sources follow the same naming conventions as a protestant Bible. The variation is in the LXX (Greek Old Testament) and the presence of the Apocrypha. For your assistance, I'll include the names you need to use to reference them here:

LXX Books (variations)

  • Ecclesiastes is called "Qoheleth"
  • Song of Songs is called "Canticle of Canticles"
